Wildlife around Silver Springs
Silver Springs has had a raccoon rabies zone, and its state park keeps records of raccoons, squirrels and bats. Here is what they show.
A rabies zone in Silver Springs
WFTV reported in July 2023 that three Marion raccoons had tested positive in a single week. The Silver Springs zone, between County Road 314 and Gores Landing, was one of three that DOH-Marion set, and people inside it were told to avoid all contact with wildlife, raccoons and bats in particular.
Raccoons and squirrels as park nuisances
The park's 2014 management plan names raccoons as native animals that can become nuisance cases, and its 2010 plan, written when it was Silver River State Park, names raccoons and gray squirrels.
Fox squirrels in the sandhill
Sherman's fox squirrels live in the park's sandhill, the 2014 plan says. The 2010 plan adds the pastures and says they are seen often, though the park doesn't support a large population.
Three kinds of squirrel
The 2014 plan's mammal list includes the gray squirrel, the fox squirrel and the southern flying squirrel, along with the raccoon.
Bats on the park's list
The 2014 plan lists the red bat in the park. A hoary bat was also documented there by the Florida Natural Areas Inventory, but none has been seen since the 1970s.
Raccoons in Marion's tables
Across Marion County, the state's rabies tables listed 7 rabid raccoons in 2024 and 6 in 2025.

There's a first time for everything! Somehow a snake made it's way into our office building and chose my office to hang out. I called Pro Wildlife on Sunday and explained it to the tech. They arranged the appointment to come and remove it for today @ 9am. The tech Zak Brooks arrived and got the snake out very quickly! He was friendly and professional!! Definitely recommend and we'd use them again if needed! Thank you again!

Josh came out & removed a dead cat from my engine that had been there for over six months! Absolutely no one else would do the job and other places said they couldn’t even find the animal. Josh found it and removed it with ease. I can’t thank him enough!
