Common problems here
Raccoons, bats and squirrels around Brooksville
Health department notices, FWC's own pages and a city trail plan put these animals on the record in and around Brooksville.
A rabid raccoon off Ted Road
DOH-Hernando issued a rabies advisory on June 2, 2025, after a raccoon killed off Ted Road in the Brooksville area (ZIP 34601) on May 28 tested positive. The department warned that rabies may be present in the wild animal population.
Free-tailed bats at Chinsegut
The Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail lists a large colony of Brazilian free-tailed bats at FWC's Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area on Lake Lindsey Road.
Fox squirrels, hands off
FWC names fox squirrels among the wildlife at Chinsegut. Under FWC's nongame rules, fox squirrels may not be taken or pursued, so a fox squirrel in a Brooksville yard is not a removal job.
No feeding on the trail
The city's Good Neighbor Trail to Russell Street Station Management Plan (1999), attached to an April 25, 2024 advisory committee agenda, says the city will prohibit feeding raccoons, squirrels and other wild animals in the trail project area. DOH-Hernando advises people not to feed wild animals.
Rodent closures on Cortez and Jefferson
State restaurant inspectors shut food businesses with Brooksville addresses 17 times from 2022 through 2025 over rodent activity, by our count of DBPR's closure reports: 10 of them in 2023. Seven were on Cortez Boulevard and four on East Jefferson Street. These are restaurant records, not home reports.
Raccoon rabies next door
On June 12, 2026, DOH-Hernando issued a 60-day rabies alert for part of Spring Hill after an unvaccinated cat attacked by a raccoon off Norvell Road tested positive.
Bats on FWC's calendar
FWC makes bat exclusion illegal during maternity season, April 16 to August 14. A colony in a Brooksville attic or church eave has to wait for mid-August.
Rats in Brooksville
Rats in Brooksville homes
Florida's house rat problem is mostly the roof rat, an animal that lives up high. Here's what UF/IFAS and Florida DOH say about it, and what that means locally. See rat removal across Hernando County.
They live up, not down
Florida DOH describes roof rats as good climbers that generally like high places, such as attics. Overhanging limbs, utility lines and pipes are their roads onto a Brooksville roof.
A gap the width of a thumb
Per UF/IFAS, a rat can get through a crack about half an inch wide. Roof returns, gable vents and the gaps around A/C lines are where we look first.
Numbers climb fast
A roof rat can have up to eight litters a year of six to eight young, and those young become sexually active two to three months after birth, according to Florida DOH. A few rats in spring can be many by fall.
A fire risk overhead
A Florida DOH guide warns that rats chewing through wire insulation can cause fires. If you find chewed cables in the attic, have an electrician look at them.
Don't feed the wildlife
Brooksville's management plan for the Good Neighbor Trail says the city will prohibit feeding raccoons, squirrels and other wild animals there. Food left out at home draws rats the same way.
Garbage in city limits
Hernando County notes that the City of Brooksville runs its own garbage collection. City residents can call (352) 540-3860 with questions. Tight lids and bins kept off the ground leave rats less to eat.

There's a first time for everything! Somehow a snake made it's way into our office building and chose my office to hang out. I called Pro Wildlife on Sunday and explained it to the tech. They arranged the appointment to come and remove it for today @ 9am. The tech Zak Brooks arrived and got the snake out very quickly! He was friendly and professional!! Definitely recommend and we'd use them again if needed! Thank you again!

Josh came out & removed a dead cat from my engine that had been there for over six months! Absolutely no one else would do the job and other places said they couldn’t even find the animal. Josh found it and removed it with ease. I can’t thank him enough!

Brooksville wildlife questions
Does the sheriff's Animal Services remove raccoons from homes?
Its Animal Services pages list pet and stray services and don't mention removing wildlife from homes (HCSO). If a person is bitten or scratched, see a doctor and report it to DOH-Hernando at (352) 540-6812. For a raccoon in the attic, see raccoon removal.
Has rabies been found near Brooksville?
