Common problems here

Living next to the preserve

Spring Hill's western neighborhoods sit right beside a large coastal preserve, so wildlife is close at hand.

Weekiwachee Preserve next door

The water district's draft management plan for Weekiwachee Preserve notes that Spring Hill borders a large part of the preserve's eastern boundary.

Don't feed the raccoons

UF/IFAS Extension in Hernando reminds residents that intentionally feeding raccoons is illegal. Feeding draws them to the house. Separately, in June 2026 an unvaccinated Spring Hill cat that a raccoon had attacked tested positive for rabies.

Twice-a-week garbage

Spring Hill's mandatory collection area gets garbage pickup twice a week, per Hernando County. Bins kept shut between pickups mean less for rats and raccoons to find.

Rats in Spring Hill

Hernando's rules that starve rats

Hernando County's garbage and code pages read like a rat-prevention checklist. Here's what they require. See rat removal across Hernando County.

Lids closed, trash bagged

Hernando says cart lids must be closed to prevent scavenging by animals, and all trash should be bagged before it goes in the cart. Only waste inside the cart with the lid closed gets collected.

Not out too early

Carts can go to the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before pickup. Any loose trash scattered during collection is the homeowner's to clean up.

Yard waste limits

Yard waste is picked up once a week, up to 15 items, with branches no thicker than 4 inches. Whole trees and trunks aren't taken curbside, and a brush pile left for weeks makes good rat cover.

Code limits

County code treats grass and weeds over 18 inches within 100 feet of improved property, and piles of trash bags, rotting vegetation or old appliances, as violations.

Bulk pickup

Coastal Waste & Recycling, (352) 540-6457, schedules bulk pickups: six a year, up to 10 items each. Old furniture left outside is a rat shelter.

Code complaints

Hernando County's main line, (352) 754-4000, is the contact on the county's code compliance page.

  • There's a first time for everything! Somehow a snake made it's way into our office building and chose my office to hang out. I called Pro Wildlife on Sunday and explained it to the tech. They arranged the appointment to come and remove it for today @ 9am. The tech Zak Brooks arrived and got the snake out very quickly! He was friendly and professional!! Definitely recommend and we'd use them again if needed! Thank you again!

  • Josh came out & removed a dead cat from my engine that had been there for over six months! Absolutely no one else would do the job and other places said they couldn’t even find the animal. Josh found it and removed it with ease. I can’t thank him enough!
