Rats, raccoons and preserves in St. Pete
The city's own rodent guide is unusually specific about how rats get into St. Pete homes. Its preserves explain the rest.
Where rats get in
St. Petersburg's rodent guide names two common rat entry points: where A/C lines go through the wall, and where a flat roof meets a pitched roof. The city recommends quarter-inch hardware cloth over spray foam, which rats chew through.
Trees as rat highways
The same guide warns that trees and landscaping touching the house become highways for rats. It also says to pick up fallen fruit and not to overfeed outdoor pets: what your pet doesn't eat, rats will.
Weedon Island Preserve
Pinellas County's 3,000-acre Weedon Island Preserve in north St. Petersburg is mostly marine habitat on Tampa Bay, with some uplands.
Boyd Hill Nature Preserve
On Lake Maggiore, Boyd Hill has hammock, pine flatwoods, scrub, swamp and marsh. FWC's Great Florida Birding Trail lists gopher tortoises, eastern indigo snakes and young alligators in the lake shallows.

St. Pete's yard and trash rules for rats
The city's rodent guide goes beyond sealing the house. These are its tips for the yard, the trash and the bird feeder. See rat removal across Pinellas County.
Firewood off the ground
The city says to stack firewood on open racks at least 18 inches off the ground and away from the house. A woodpile against the wall is a ready-made rat nest.
Bird feeders
If you feed birds, St. Pete suggests a squirrel- and rat-deterring feeder, and a pan underneath to catch spilled seed, emptied before sundown.
Carts out in the morning
Garbage goes in closed containers, rolled to the curb only on the morning of collection day. Most single-family homes get one 90-gallon cart and twice-weekly pickup.
Junk and overgrowth
City rules say discarded items can't be left in the yard, and owners must keep vegetation trimmed on their property and the city right-of-way. Both cut down on rat cover.

Brandon came out of his way to help remove a raccoon who had decided to use my front door mat for nap. Brandon was very polite and professional. He removed Ralph without issue and pretty quickly.

There's a first time for everything! Somehow a snake made it's way into our office building and chose my office to hang out. I called Pro Wildlife on Sunday and explained it to the tech. They arranged the appointment to come and remove it for today @ 9am. The tech Zak Brooks arrived and got the snake out very quickly! He was friendly and professional!! Definitely recommend and we'd use them again if needed! Thank you again!

Josh came out & removed a dead cat from my engine that had been there for over six months! Absolutely no one else would do the job and other places said they couldn’t even find the animal. Josh found it and removed it with ease. I can’t thank him enough!

FAQ
St. Petersburg wildlife questions
Will the City of St. Petersburg get rid of rats in my house?
Not inside. The city's Sanitation Department helps with rats outside properties and in neighborhoods (727-893-7398), but for rodents inside a home the city says to call a private company. If you were about to search for a rat exterminator, we're a wildlife removal company instead: we trap the rats inside and seal their entry points, with no spraying. See rats in the attic.
Who do I call about injured wildlife in St. Pete?
The city sends injured wildlife and stray animal concerns to Pinellas County Animal Services, (727) 582-2600, option 4. For a healthy animal living in your attic or walls, call a wildlife removal company.
Am I responsible for rats on my St. Petersburg property?
Yes. St. Petersburg's code requires owners or occupants to eliminate rodent infestations, and occupants of single-family and two-family homes are responsible for their own pest control.
Should I seal the holes before the rats are gone?
Not on your own. St. Petersburg's guide says to seal gaps only after the rats inside are gone, so none are shut in. Our rat removal page explains how we seal entry points and trap the rats left inside.
How fast can someone reach a St. Pete home?
