Bats in Pasco County
Bats in Pasco's buildings and records
Pasco has had big colonies in public buildings, and one rabid bat on a school campus. Here is what the county's records and FWC's rules say.
500 to 1,000 bats in a fire station
In June 2017, WUSF and Fox 13 reported that 500 to 1,000 bats had forced crews out of Pasco Fire Station 39 on County Line Road in Hudson. Bat boxes put up earlier didn't keep them out, and full removal had to wait until after August, when the pups matured.
A rabid bat at Sunlake High
WUFT reported in 2014 that Brazilian free-tailed bats had moved into Sunlake High School in Land O' Lakes, and one found dead tested positive for rabies. FWC and a contractor put up one-way devices so the bats could leave but not return.
Report bat contact
Pasco County Animal Services says any bare skin contact with a bat should be reported to DOH-Pasco or the county, and so should a bat found in a room where someone was sleeping.
Rare, but on the record
Pasco counted 24 rabid animals from 2013 to 2023, and one was a bat. The state's county tables listed no rabid bats for Pasco in 2024 or 2025, while their statewide totals listed 30 bats and then 42.
Keep them out of living space
DOH-Pasco's July 30, 2026 rabies advisory, issued after two rabid raccoons on the east side of the county, told residents to keep wildlife, bats included, out of living quarters and other occupied spaces.
Pups in summer
FWC sets bat maternity season from April 16 to August 14. Exclusion devices can't go on a Pasco roof in that window without a permit.
Bat houses for the evicted
After the 2014 Sunlake exclusion, WUFT reported, students planned two bat houses, built from four 2-by-2-foot boxes that should each hold about 200 to 300 bats, mounted on telephone poles 15 to 20 feet up, one behind a baseball field and one near a cypress swamp. In Hudson, bat boxes alone hadn't kept the colony out of the station.

Steve did a great job getting rid of the bats we had in our bat house that was attached to our house and sealing it off and our house. I would highly recommend him.

Brandon came out of his way to help remove a raccoon who had decided to use my front door mat for nap. Brandon was very polite and professional. He removed Ralph without issue and pretty quickly.

There's a first time for everything! Somehow a snake made it's way into our office building and chose my office to hang out. I called Pro Wildlife on Sunday and explained it to the tech. They arranged the appointment to come and remove it for today @ 9am. The tech Zak Brooks arrived and got the snake out very quickly! He was friendly and professional!! Definitely recommend and we'd use them again if needed! Thank you again!
