Marion County bats: palms, caves and rabies records

Marion has rabid bats on its record, Extension advice on bats in palms, a state park plan that lists its bats, and bat maternity caves. Here is what they say.

One rabid bat on four years of tables

Marion's 2022 rabies table listed a rabid bat along with 2 raccoons. The county's 2023, 2024 and 2025 tables listed no rabid bats.

Palm skirts are roosts

UF/IFAS Extension Marion County wrote in 2021 that dead palm fronds are a favorite roost for several bat species, and asked residents not to prune palm skirts during the bat maternity period.

Pup season, Extension says

The same 2021 Extension post said baby bats are called pups, that Florida has 13 native bat species and that it is illegal year-round to intentionally harm or kill bats.

Silver Springs State Park's 2014 management plan lists the red bat and southeastern myotis, and says FNAI documented a hoary bat on the former attraction property that hasn't been observed since the 1970s.

Maternity caves on the state's list

Florida's 2026 Florida Forever plan for southeastern bat maternity caves names two Marion County caves, Catacombs Cave and Jenning's Cave, and lists Catacombs as occupied. Each spring, the plan says, adult female southeastern bats move to certain caves to bear and raise their young.

  • Brandon came out of his way to help remove a raccoon who had decided to use my front door mat for nap. Brandon was very polite and professional. He removed Ralph without issue and pretty quickly.

  • There's a first time for everything! Somehow a snake made it's way into our office building and chose my office to hang out. I called Pro Wildlife on Sunday and explained it to the tech. They arranged the appointment to come and remove it for today @ 9am. The tech Zak Brooks arrived and got the snake out very quickly! He was friendly and professional!! Definitely recommend and we'd use them again if needed! Thank you again!

FAQ

Bat questions in Marion County

Which months can a Marion County bat colony be excluded?

From August 15 to April 15, under FWC's rules. Maternity season, April 16 to August 14, needs a permit. Devices should stay up at least four nights with lows forecast at 50°F or higher.

Should I trim my palm trees if bats roost in them?

Not during pup season. UF/IFAS Extension Marion asks residents to leave the dead fronds, or skirts, alone during the maternity period, since several bat species roost there.

Have bats in Marion County had rabies?

Marion's 2022 table listed one rabid bat; its 2023 to 2025 tables listed none. Never handle a bat, and report any bite or bare-skin contact to DOH-Marion, 352-629-0137.

Can I poison or trap the bats in my attic?

No. Extension Marion and FWC both say killing or harming bats is illegal, and FWC bans poisons, fumigants and relocation. One-way exclusion is the legal method.

Can someone come look at bats in Marion County today?

Same-day appointments for bats are often available in Marion County. Call (844) 264-6254.
